Charlton supporters, already horrified at the brutal murder of PC Keith Palmer at the gates of The Houses of Parliament on Wednesday, were further shocked to learn that he was a loyal Addick himself who had held a season ticket in the East Stand for a number of years.
There will be some people in the crowd who knew him personally but there will be many more who just saw him regularly at games and who had perhaps exchanged a few words, a few sighs and, we hope, more than a few delighted smiles with him over the years. He will be missed by all and his empty seat will be a poignant reminder of the risks that people like him take every day on our behalf.
The club issued this statement on Thursday.
CAS Trust would like to congratulate the club for this sensitive statement and for the moving and imaginative gesture of placing a scarf on Keith's seat. There is no doubt that a full and appropriate tribute will be paid to this courageous man by club and supporters at the next opportunity.
The words of Brendan Cox (husband of Jo Cox MP) might be helpful here:
"In the days to come I hope we'll remember the hope and bravery of the victim, not just the hatred and cowardice of the attacker"
