Heather McKinlay: Booted by Brighton

This month marks one hundred years since women's football was banned by the F.A. and it is therefore being celebrated as women's football month. The ban lasted for fifty years. Heather McKinlay recalls how she relished her freedom at last to play the beautiful game and, in particular, the day she bought her first pair of football boots while The Addicks were facing Brighton at The Goldstone Ground.

"Our first ladies football training session was set for Sunday afternoon. This was 1983 – we were still ladies then, though once we started kicking the ball, and later lumps out of each other, we soon became women."
