Central defender Lloyd Jones became Charlton's second signing of the summer when he penned a two year contract this week.
He began his career with his home-town club Plymouth but Liverpool were sufficiently impressed by his potential to pay £150,000 for him shortly before his sixteenth birthday in 2011. He was to remain at Anfield for seven years where, despite being captain of the reserve side along with being an unused substitute for a game in July 2013, he never made an appearance for the first team. Between 2014 and 2017 he had loan spells at Cheltenham and Accrington (League Two) and Blackpool and Swindon (League One).
In January 2018 - then aged 23 - he joined Luton Town but during three years at Kenilworth Road he made only six appearances, albeit four were in The Championship. He was again loaned out - to Plymouth and Northampton - and he subsequently joined Northampton in December 2020 for the remainder of their season in League One. He played 27 League games for them and was named as captain for the first time in their 1-2 defeat at The Valley in March 2021.
After Northampton's relegation he joined Cambridge and, for the first time in his career, he played regular first team football with 61 appearances over the last two years. He came out on top in the public vote to claim the Cambridge United Player of the Season award for 2022-23. He scored four goals including one against us last March.
Dean Holden commented: “Lloyd signs for us on the back of an excellent season at Cambridge United. He's a very good centre-half who plays with real authority, is confident on the ball and a threat from set pieces. He’s a good leader with experience of captaining sides. Our set piece record, both defensively and in front of goal, was a clear area where we wanted to improve on last season and Lloyd will be important for us in both boxes.”
