Who is Terry Taylor ?

Midfielder Terry Taylor became Charlton's sixth signing ahead of the new season when he joined last week from Burton Albion.

The twenty two year old Scot began his career in youth football at Aberdeen but joined the Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy as a sixteen year old in 2017. He made his first team debut in an EFL Cup game against Aston Villa in October 2019 but that was to be his only game for the club. He played 14 games for League Two Grimsby on loan in 2020/21 and joined Burton at the end of the January 2021 transfer window. He went on to play 58 times in League One for The Brewers. Since his Wolves debut he has made 84 senior appearances in all competitions but is yet to score his first goal.

He represented Scotland at under 17 and under 18 level and captained Wales at under 21 level. He qualifies for Wales as his mother is Welsh.

Dean Holden is excited at the prospect of working with Taylor. He explained: “Terry is a fantastic young talent and we’re really pleased he has chosen to join Charlton with plenty of interest from other clubs. He’s got a good eye for a pass and is an excellent set-piece taker. He is really good off the ball in terms of his mobility around the pitch, his pressing and his ability to win the ball back. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

New Technical Director Andy Scott put the signing in the context of the club's strategy:

“The signing of Terry is another example of the club’s recruitment strategy this summer - ambitious, young, talented players who want to come and play for Charlton and be successful. He is a player we identified with real potential and excellent character. He has impressed playing plenty of games in League One and, given his age and ability, has the potential to develop into a Championship player.”

Taylor himself enthused: "I think the big thing that sticks out to me was the ambition, his [Dean Holden's] plan and how he plans to execute it this season and just where the club is headed, in the general direction, I think there’s a really good feel to it."
