As Charlton Women take on Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round of the Adobe FA Cup at Brisbane Road on Saturday afternoon 10th February, we ask if the Addicks can spring a cup surprise?
The romance of the FA Cup is something that lies at the heart of Charlton's identity. Both our women's and men's teams have been winners. We are one of only five clubs which can lay claim to such an achievement. As such, when it comes to both our history and our present performances on the pitch, we are right at home in the 5th round of the Women's FA Cup. On Saturday evening the Championship-topping Addicks travel to Brisbane Road, the home ground of Tottenham Women. Being in the Super League, our opponents will start as favourites but we have plenty of reason to have faith in the possibility of an upset.
This season the high-flying Charlton Women have 30 points from 15 games with only a single defeat. They can go to Brisbane Road (also home to Leyton Orient men) with every hope of competing. There's certainly a great buzz in the camp as recently shown on the club website with Head Coach Karen Hills having deep knowledge of Saturday's opponents. She spent eleven years there as manager, between 2009 and 2020, helping the Spurs rise up through the ranks of the Women's football pyramid.
One thing that will undoubtably give confidence to the Addicks is that they have averaged 1.5 goals per game over the course of the season whilst Tottenham have conceded an average of two per game. And it is the FA Cup after all where, in the men's version this season, the likes of Maidstone and a certain Cray Valley have upset the odds with their performances in knockout games on the day.
In this case it's on the evening, with a 5.15pm kick-off, so if you're free or in the vicinity, what better way to spend your evening than cheering the Addicks in this 'Karen Hills derby.' ?
Also important to remember that tickets for the game are available here rather than on the gate and that supporters can meet up beforehand from 2.30pm in the Coach & Horses pub in Leyton.
