Sky have announced that a new channel (Sky Sports+) will be launched in August and have declared that every EFL club will be featured at least twenty times in the 2024/25 season.
Ten games will be broadcast each weekend (Friday evening; Saturday lunchtime and Sunday lunchtime) and all midweek fixtures will be broadcast. In addition all Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy games will be shown live. Every game on the opening weekend of the season will be broadcast - even those that are 3pm Saturday games. This means that during the season 26 games per weekend will be played (unbroadcast) in the traditional Saturday 3pm slot.
This is part of the new deal between Sky Sports and the EFL which will run for the next five years. It is made up of guaranteed payments of £895m plus £40m in marketing benefits. One club official who wished to remain anonymous told The Athletic that he estimated the increase in income for League One clubs will work out at about £450k per club. Last month Sky said that, as part of the deal, iFollow (the EFL's existing streaming service) and club streaming services would be scrapped domestically.
iFollow will close in the UK but keep running for the rest of the world. EFL clubs will be able to continue international streaming services direct to fans overseas, where matches are not being broadcast exclusively, but we don't yet know whether Charlton intend to continue this.
Next season's fixtures will be released on June 26th and Sky Sports are planning to announce scheduled EFL TV picks from August up until the FA Cup third round as soon as possible thereafter. They say they are taking this action to avoid potential fan disruption when kick off times are changed at short notice. January to March broadcast fixtures will be announced by November but, after that, a "traditional" notice period will be followed as the main storylines emerge.
So Charlton fans will have to adjust to different kick off times applying regularly. This will be disruptive to established schedules and will on occasion create major challenges for fans wishing to attend away games. It is hard to believe that crowds for matches played on Friday evenings will not suffer in comparison with Saturday 3pm.
