Charlton have signed midfielder Allan Campbell (26) on a season-long loan from Luton Town.
Glasgow born Campbell came through the Motherwell youth system and played 135 Scottish Premiership games (14 goals) for the club from 2016 to 2021. Nathan Jones then signed him for Luton where he played 75 games in two seasons and was an integral part of the side that gained promotion to The Premier League in May 2023 under Rob Edwards.
He didn't make it into Luton's Premier League team and was on loan for the second half of last season at Millwall. Now that Luton have returned to The Championship it is intriguing that they have chosen to allow him to leave on loan. He has never played below Championship level but it is clear that his relationship with Jones underpins his readiness to drop down to League One.
"He brought me to Luton from Scotland so he knows me well and I know him well from working under him. I know what type of person he is - he’s got a drive to succeed and do well, and I thrive under that environment. He got the best out of me when I played under him. When I spoke to him about his ambitions for this club and where he sees the team going this year, it made me want to come straight away.”
Jones was equally enthusiastic:
"He's a player who was pivotal in Luton's promotion to the Premier League the season before last. He gives us another option in midfield, with his quality and experience. I loved working with him before, so when the opportunity came up to sign him for Charlton I really wanted to bring him here."
Speaking on Charlton Live this week Tash Everitt quoted a Luton supporter who told her that Campbell would "happily slide tackle his nan if he thought he could win the ball"
The last time we signed a player called Alan Campbell he scored four goals on his debut as a sixteen year old against Watford Colts, made his debut as a seventeen year old in the game when Keith Peacock became the first substitute and and went on to play 214 games for Charlton's first team, scoring 29 goals. Just saying.
