Dan Potts is a 30 year old left sided defender who has signed a short-term contract (until January). He was a free agent who has been training with the club since pre-season.
He is the son of former West Ham defender Steve Potts and he began his career at West Ham making two Championship and three Premier League appearances as a teenager.
He joined Luton in August 2015 and made 79 appearances for them at League Two level before their promotion in 2018. He played 24 times in their team which achieved promotion at the first attempt from League One in 2019 and he went on to play 92 Championship games over the ensuing four years. In the play-off shoot out against Coventry at Wembley in May 2023 it was Potts who scored the winning (6-5) penalty which promoted Luton to The Premier League. Matty Godden (Coventry) and Luke Berry (Luton) also scored penalties in that shoot out.
He didn't make any appearances in the Premier League last season and, despite their relegation, Luton did not renew his contract. All in all he made 190 league appearances for the club over ten seasons, 165 of which were under the management of Nathan Jones.
Jones is thrilled to be reunited with Potts: “Dan is someone that has played for me before, has been promoted and knows what it takes every day to be at it to create this winning culture and winning environment. What we’ve done is try to create the environment and the collective to make us as strong as possible. To do that we need competition in every position and we need people that are going to drive the environment, people that know what it takes to win at all costs. Pottsy knows that and I’m delighted to have him. We know that he’ll add real value - one to the environment and two to the culture and also the squad. Then when he plays he’ll add real competition and something different to what we’ve got.”
