After giving Women's Super League Tottenham a run for their considerable money in the League Cup on Wednesday evening, table-topping Charlton are looking to make it five successive league wins on Sunday (2pm) when they welcome Sunderland to The Valley.
The 2-1 win over Durham on September 22nd was hard-earned and perhaps a bit fortunate but last Sunday's 2-0 win up at Blackburn was polished and assured as the team efficiently protected the early lead they had established. The win means that they now have a lead of three points over Durham and five over third place Birmingham.
Sunderland were among the pace setters last season and were one of three clubs vying with Crystal Palace for the promotion spot until the final few games. However, they made a disastrous start to this season - losing 0-5 at Birmingham first time out and 0-3 at home to Southampton in their second game. Their 1-0 defeat of highly fancied London City Lionesses on Sunday therefore came as a real surprise. Either they have done some impressive work on the training ground or the Lionesses are not as good as they are thought to be.
Last season's match with Sunderland was also at The Valley and, when the home side took the lead in the ninetieth minute, it looked as if they had managed to grind out a win. The visitors, however, had other ideas and replied in the 95th minute to take a share of the points. The attendance that day was 1,001 and the current team certainly deserve to be getting that sort of support rather than the 400 or so who turned out for the Durham game.
Come down on Sunday and join the select group who, when Atlanta Primus takes the field, can say that they have seen the only father daughter combination to have ever played for Charlton Athletic.
