Women take on ambitious Lionesses

Our table-topping women's team are playing down the road in Bromley this Sunday (2pm). While the men's team have a weekend off why not get your Charlton fix by cheering the women on against London City Lionesses at Hayes Lane ?

The Lionesses are owned by Kynisca - a multi-club organisation for women's teams which also owns European giants Lyon and Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) . Kynisca is owned by American businesswoman Michele Kang, who sees women's football as big business and has made her intentions clear with hopes to buy more clubs.

She has appointed as global sporting director Markel Zubizarreta who is former head of women’s football at the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and was sporting director of Barcelona's women's team, who have won three of the past four Women's Champions Leagues. They have appointed former Paris St-Germain boss Jocelyn Precheur as their manager.

They have  signed Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani and they broke the Women's Championship transfer record this summer when they signed forward Izzy Goodwin from Sheffield United for a six-figure fee.

Their goal, according to Zubizaretta is to reach the WSL "as quickly as possible" and they have made a promising start to the Championship season. They sit three points behind Charlton in fourth place and, since drawing at home to Newcastle on the first day of the season, they have beaten Bristol City, Blackburn and Portsmouth. However, they lost 1-0 at Durham two weeks ago. Izzy Goodwin had failed to score until last weekend but she made up for it by getting four against Portsmouth.

There were some serious wobbles in our defence last Sunday but the team showed great spirit in coming back from 1-3 down to gain a 3-3 draw with Sunderland. Leading scorer Ellie Brazil missed the game through concussion but should be fit to return on Sunday. In her absence former Lioness Karin Muya scored a brace to add to our brilliant opening headed goal by Kayleigh Barton from Jodie Hutton's superb cross.

The women's team have made it very clear that they really value our vocal support. You can get your tickets here:
