Who is Tom McIntyre?

Tom is a 26 year old left sided centre half who joined on loan from Portsmouth late on deadline day.

Born in Reading he came through the club's Academy and made his senior debut in 2018 in a 1-1 draw with Rotherham. He won the Man of the Match award but after the game it was revealed he had played with a fractured forehead and required surgery for metal plates to be fitted. He was consequently ruled out of playing any further games for a few months.

He represented Reading for the following six seasons making 105 League appearances, all but ten of which were in The Championship.

On January transfer deadline day 2024 he signed a two and a half year contract with Portsmouth and made his debut against Northampton a few days later. It was another dramatic debut as he was given a 55th minute straight red card after a tackle on Mitch Pinnock. The card was subsequently rescinded but the force of the tackle meant that he had fractured his ankle. He made no further appearances in Portsmouth's promotion campaign.

This season he has played only twelve times for Pompey and will no doubt be hoping to gain more first team football by dropping down to League One. If he makes his debut on Saturday we hope his entire body remains intact.

Nathan Jones commented: "Tom is a centre-half with a load of experience. He got in the Reading side as a young player and has played in the Championship for the majority of his career. He’s a real good footballing centre-half, one that can develop play for us and one that has real good experience and pedigree for his age. We’ve been able to strengthen and add a bit more balance to our defence with him being left-footed."

McIntyre said: "It’s a brilliant feeling. It’s been a late one, one that was really appealing to me. As soon as I heard that there was a bit of interest from Charlton, I was really excited to get it done."

Technical Director Andy Scott added: "We’re really happy we’re bringing Tom in. He’s a real competitor. We’ve had some very impressive reports on him as a character - he really wants to come in and prove his worth. He’s left-footed, a good footballer, brave - he’s played at full-back, centre-back and as a holding midfielder. It’s a really good opportunity for him and for us."
