Dean Bouzanis is a 34 year old goalkeeper who has signed until the end of the season.
He was born in Sydney but signed in 2007 by Liverpool as a 17 year old when he was described by Rafael Benitez as "the best goalkeeper in the world for his age." Despite this he never made a first team appearance and, after a loan spell at Accrington, he joined Oldham where he played for two seasons.
Over the next decade he played in Australia, Greece, Holland and in England where he was a regular in Sutton United's team which won promotion from the National League in 2021. He then had three years at Reading but only made six appearances before returning on loan to Sutton last season. His contract with Reading was cancelled last month by mutual consent.
Nathan Jones said "Dean’s been training with us now for the last month following the injury to Ashley [Maynard-Brewer]. With the precarious nature of the emergency loan market, we felt it was better to sign someone who we’ve had in the environment and Dean’s done very well since coming here. He’s got real good experience, he’s fitted in with the group really well and he provides real good competition for what is already a good goalkeeping department."
Bouzanis added: "It’s an honour to be here and an opportunity that I’m looking forward to with this fantastic group that’s fighting at the right end of the table. Hopefully we can do something special come the end of the season."
We might never see him play or he might save five penalties at Wembley in May. Either way, we welcome him and wish him well.
