The North East (in the shape of Durham, Newcastle and Sunderland) has been conquered and Charlton Women return to SE7 this weekend sitting proudly atop the WSL 2 table with a three point lead after five games.
Their opening run means that they are now sixteen games unbeaten in the league dating back to last November.
Jodie Hutton’s brace proved to be decisive last time out against Sunderland. Charlton looked a much more fluent and attacking side than they have in recent weeks and could quite easily have scored four or five. McAteer had a good shot saved at 0-0 and Thestrup wasted a a good opportunity before Hutton’s wonder strike on 19 minutes. Hutton wasted a strike shortly after as well as hitting the bar before turning in McAteer’s cross after 68 minutes. However, Kiera Skeels and Elisha N’Dow both had to be withdrawn due to injury late in the second half and that will be a concern to Karen Hills as both have been in good form and have contributed massively to The Addicks great defensive record of conceding just one goal in the first five fixtures.
Sheffield United are the visitors this Sunday (2pm kick off). The Blades finished five points adrift last season but were saved from relegation by the demise of Blackburn. This season they find themselves in 10th place, just a single point above rock bottom Portsmouth. Last time out they chalked up their first win of the season with a 3-2 defeat of Ipswich. They were three goals to the good after 50 minutes before conceding twice. Ex Addick Beth Roe’s 80th minute red card secured the victory for Sheffield United.
Karen Hills will be hoping her strikers can finally start firing against a defence that has already conceded ten goals in five league games. If the team play like they did against Sunderland then there should be plenty of chances created. With a break from league duty and title challengers Birmingham City up next, this fixture is must win.
Over 900 fans attended the recent 0-0 draw with Ipswich. With no other football in SE7 this weekend let's get behind the team and push that number into four figures. Tickets are priced at £7 and can be bought from the link below or at the ticket office before the game.
