Wednesday night was more than a bit breathless. Three departures, two arrivals and plenty of other rumours swirling around. No time for our traditional “Who Is?” pieces, so a shortened wrap up will have to do.
With Ashley Maynard-Brewer going north of the border to Dundee United after over a decade of service it makes sense that a keeper would come in. Academy keepers Tommy Reid and Lennon MacLorg are both out on loan so the squad was looking a bit threadbare. Step forward Gateshead’s Tiernan Brooks. he is a 23 year old with upwards of 60 senior appearances, mainly at National League level. He has also represented Ireland at U21 level. There is an irony that he replaces Maynard-Brewer, a keeper that Gateshead manager Rob Elliot has sung the praises of. Brooks has impressed in the north east and was rumoured to have earned the interest of League Two clubs. It is highly unlikely that he will make it onto the pitch this season but it’s good to have numbers in a goalkeeping group.
Once Rob Apter left for Bolton on loan the Addicks right hand side looked threadbare again. Although Apter has barely played since September he was always there as an emergency option at wing back on either side. Nathan Jones has attempted to rectify the issue by signing Jayden Fevrier on loan from Stockport. Fevrier seems like more of a direct Thierry Small replacement. His pace is more explosive than Apter, he’s stockier and he plays with a bit more flair. There is also an inconsistency to Fevrier’s game and Apter certainly has the more reliable delivery. Two positives of the Fevrier signing are that he has played significant game time on each flank and has been played at wing back before, neither of which Apter can boast.
Thursday saw the arrival of experienced centre back Conor Coady (pictured) from Wrexham. The ex England international has made just five league appearances for the Welsh side, with the last one coming in September. He was heavily criticised for his lack of pace for a team that were attempting to play a very high line. At this stage of his career Coady’s main attributes will be his leadership and experience. The Charlton squad is not one filled with Championship experience and Coady has that in buckets. The Liverpudlian has played 184 Championship matches along with 198 in the Premier League, 18 in the Europa League and has 11 England caps. He can only really play in the centre of a back three so it is yet to see how often he plays. With Lloyd Jones known to play through injuries it is possible that Coady rotates with Jones to help manage minutes.
With four more days of the window left and rumours swirling it is unlikely Coady will be the last signing of the window.
