Liverpool left sided defender Luke Chambers has signed on loan for the Addicks until the end of the season.
Chambers has first team experience at Liverpool, as well as from loan spells at Kilmarnock and Wigan Athletic.
He has been in the Liverpool academy since 2010 and made his senior debut in a League Cup tie in September 2023 before starting a match against Toulouse in the Europa League a month later. The 21 year old’s first taste of senior football came in a six month loan spell at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock where he made 14 appearances.
Wigan was his next stop, with two loan spells and a total of 30 league appearances. Those spells produced two goals and four assists but were cut short due to a persistent back injury. He made his return from injury playing for Liverpool Under 21’s, most recently featuring in a 7-0 demolishing of Arsenal.
Fans of Wigan have praised Chambers positional discipline, reading of the game and marauding forward runs ending in dangerous crosses. He also took set pieces for the Latics which suggests he can take over those duties from the now-departed James Bree.
There are concerns over his injury record but mainly it is just a relief to see a left sided defender in the building. Tyreece Campbell has filled in admirably but is not a defender and his attacking threat has been dulled. The new arrival's crossing prowess should also come in handy with Lyndon Dykes and Miles Leaburn in the box.
Manager Nathan Jones told the official website: "It’s no secret that we’ve been working hard to bring in a player that can come in and contribute on our left side, including at left wing-back, so I’m delighted that Luke has joined us. He’s a talented, young, hungry player of real pedigree, having come through the Liverpool youth system"
Chambers told the website: "I'm over the moon. I know how passionate the fans are about the club and having played against Charlton last season, I know how good The Valley is so I can’t wait to get going. We’ve obviously got a big game on Saturday, so I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans and showing them what I’ve got"
Welcome to SE7, Luke!
