CAFC and the minimum wage

Charlton Athletic Football Club was last week named as one of only three football clubs that had failed to pay the minimum wage to workers. In Charlton's case it affected 45 workers.

CAST raised this matter with the club. In addition, the Football Supporters Association has called on all clubs to act to protect workers' pay. Read the article here thefsa.org.uk/news/clubs-must-act-to-protect-matchday-workers-pay/

CAST voted in favour of the AGM motion referred to in the article.

The club has written to Charlton Advisory Board as follows:

You may have seen today’s report naming Charlton Athletic among 389 UK employers found to have paid some staff below the National Minimum Wage.

This relates to a historic issue identified shortly after the Global Football Partners takeover. As soon as it came to light, the club corrected the underpayment in full and paid the required HMRC penalty. The matter was resolved in March 2024, and we have had no similar issues since.

CAST will continue to be alert to the fair treatment of club staff. It is good in this instance that the club acknowledged and rectified this issue. We all wish to uphold our values as the original community club that aims to be cohesive and sustainable.
