Automatic promotion in our own hands

It feels like an age since Charlton Women played in the league.

When they step on to the pitch on Sunday it will have been nearly a month. That is a long time to have the heartbreak of the Crystal Palace game on their minds.

Of course they have played in the FA Cup but that was another heartbreak as they held WSL Liverpool for 118 minutes before Zara Shaw somehow flicked the ball into the back of their net.

Charlotte Newsham, Sophie Whitehouse, Ellie Mason and Mia Ross have spent time away on international duty and Carla Humphrey has continued her return to training after maternity leave. All welcome distractions for the group.

It is important to remember that promotion is still in their hands and it could still be confirmed on Sunday. If Palace lose in their 2pm game at Sunderland our women could take the field at 4pm knowing a draw would guarantee second place.

Southampton are in no danger of relegation and cannot make the play off spot. We can hope that they are "on the beach" with towels down, parasols up and hunting for ice cream. The fact that the game has been switched from St Mary's to Eastleigh might also represent a fall off in interest.

Former Addicks Mary Bashford and Ellie Brazil have been on good form for them with seven and six goals respectively and loanee Atlanta Primus has four assists. The team have been in good form with their only defeat in their last five games being at the hands of table-topping Birmingham.

Regardless of all that, if they can play like they did against Liverpool they should be able to win the game. That would mean a draw in the final game against Birmingham would be enough to avoid play off agony and gain automatic promotion.
