Move aside Collins Sichnje and get some ugali ready. There’s a new Kenyan in town.

Timothy Ouma has become the seventh signing of the transfer window, joining on a season long loan from Slavia Prague. Charlton have also negotiated an option for a permanent deal should the new arrival be a success.

22 year old Ouma plays in midfield and, if his YouTube compilations are to be believed, is likely to be a physical presence. He looks quick, strong and happy to dive into a challenge. He will bring energy that 31 year old Nathaniel Chalobah may struggle to provide. Ouma spent last season on loan at Lech Poznan and his team won the Polish top flight. Despite playing for a team that dominated possession he still ranked high in the league for defensive contributions, tackles and recoveries. It’s clear that Ouma isn’t a player who hides, Nathan Jones has spoken this window about looking for a player to dominate midfield and the new man seems to fit that bill.

As a 16 year old Ouma made his debut for Nairobi City All Star. He stayed at his local club for two seasons before moving to Europe to sign for IF Elfsborg. Another two year stint followed, including making appearances in the Europa League and earning a move to Slavia Prague. He failed to make an impression is Czechia, playing just one game before being loaned to Lech Poznan. He is also a full international and has made 13 appearances for Kenya. He told club media that when they are both on international duty he rooms with Sichenje.

All told Ouma is a bit of an unknown. It’s unclear if he’s ready to play immediately at the weekend or if he’ll need time to bed in. With Ouma, Chalobah, Greg Docherty, Conor Coventry, Joe Rankin-Costello and Alan Mwamba all competing for two roles at the base of midfield we seem to be oversubscribed. It wouldn’t be a shock to see Charlton try to shift Rankin-Costello to try and make space in the squad. If the new recruit is deemed to be a success it’s shrewd business to have agreed a fee for a future transfer already. If he doesn’t meet expectations then we haven’t lost too much.
