21 year old defender Tyler Bindon has become the eight addition of the window, signing on a season long loan deal from Nottingham Forest.
He is the son of Jenny Bindon - a goalkeeper who represented the White Ferns 77 times and, when Tyler played in this summer's World Cup, they became the first mother and son duo to represent their nation at the World Cup.
The family moved from Auckland to California when Tyler was twelve and his mother coached the UCLA Women’s Soccer Team. Tyler joined the LAFC academy where he stayed until 2023 when aged 18 he signed for Reading. An impressive season and a half followed which earned him a move to Nottingham Forest in January 2025. Reading were in financial difficulties at the time and reluctantly agreed to sell the defender only on the condition that he was loaned back for the rest of the season. He went on to win The Royals’ Player of The Season award while the team narrowly missed out on a place in the play offs. He is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Premier League side and last season was spent on loan at Sheffield United where he had to be patient while waiting to get on the pitch but eventually made 25 league appearances.
The New Zealand International (28 caps) is right footed but very comfortable playing on the left and in fact played on the left side of a back four for Sheffield United. Aerially he is not as strong as Lloyd Jones or Billy Koumetio but it would be harsh to call him weak in the air as Jones and Koumetio set such a high bar. He is a comfortable ground defender, making plenty of tackles, interceptions and recoveries. Perhaps most importantly, the Kiwi has the calmness and composure of Amari’i Bell and has never had any real injury issues.
After the disaster of a week Charlton experienced in the injury department, Nathan Jones and Co. have acted quickly and decisively to bring in a defender with Championship experience and international pedigree. Koumetio can now be eased back slowly but. when he is ready, there will be top competition for the centre back slot alongside Jones. Nathan Jones is going to have some selection headaches going forward.
Welcome to SE7, Tyler.
