19 year old winger Junior Nkeng became Charlton’s tenth signing of the summer, bolstering our attacking options. Nkeng isn’t a player most Addicks will have heard of but he has the Johnnie Jackson seal of approval.

Nkeng was born in Barcelona and moved to London aged seven. He played academy football for Brentford and Spurs before being released and joining Wimbledon on scholarship terms. He made his senior debut aged just 16 in an EFL Trophy game. His league debut would come a year later, in December last year. The winger has played 25 times in League One, scoring twice.

Last season he was primarily used as either a left winger or a left wing back. Speaking to the club website he said he can operate on both sides. Highlight videos show a player unafraid to take on his man and the stats back it up, he averaged more successful dribbles per 90 minutes than every other winger in League One. He also rated highly when it comes to winning back possession high up the pitch.

Nathan Jones has spoken all summer about the need for one v one dribbling threats. With Tyreece Campbell and Millenic Alli also in the squad that’s three wingers who love that aspect of the game. Miles Leaburn is also strong when running at defenders and Karlan Grant isn’t exactly a bad dribbler either. Nkeng only started 13 league games last season, he is raw and will frustrate. It also sounds like he will excite, taking on full backs and playing with confidence. Sometimes inexperience can be a useful weapon as  it can release bravery and creativity. Nathan Jones has shown with Campbell and Leaburn that he can nurture and develop young attacking talent, Nkeng should be in good hands.
