Heather Alderson to speak at Westminster Media conference

CAST vice chair Heather Alderson will be a speaker at a July conference on the next steps for football governance and regulation in England. The conference is organised by the Westminster Media Forum and is aimed largely at policy makers and media and sport professionals.

Other confirmed speakers include Martyn Henderson - Shadow Regulator, Dept for Culture, Media & Sport; Clare Sumner CBE - Chief Policy & Corporate Affairs Officer (Premier League).

"Delegates will examine the suitability of provisions for financial sustainability outlined in the now paused Football Governance Bill, which is expected to be introduced to Parliament after the General Election, including the future for parachute payments and issues surrounding intervention in the distribution of finances throughout the football pyramid, as well as options for increased fan engagement in decision-making processes.

Those attending will explore the potential scope and functionality of strengthened Owners’ and Directors’ Tests, and implications of regulatory intervention for future investment and football club ownership in England.

The agenda also looks at next steps for clubs, their boards and senior leaders in light of expected new corporate governance regulations, including the potential impact of governance codes and options for supporting smaller clubs.

The conference will also be an opportunity to examine the proposed introduction of a shadow regulator, including priorities for league, club and investor engagement with preparatory work. Sessions will examine expected challenges for interoperability with existing regulatory frameworks and governing bodies, and next steps for developing an evidence base for regulation."
